THIS WEEK’S THEME:
Autistic Authors
April is āAutism Awareness Monthā and Iām excited to post all kinds of goodies that have to do with autism on Friday Faves! I have a wonderful, precocious, smart, funny, beautiful niece on the āspectrum.ā Sheās six years old and Iām almost ashamed to say that before her birth, I wasnāt really aware of autism. I mean, Iād heard of it but I didnāt really KNOW anything about it.
What are some of the SYMPTOMS of ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)?
According to theĀ CDC.GOV, children with ASD may exhibit:
- “Not respond to their name by 12 months of age
- Not point at objects to show interest (point at an airplane flying over) by 14 months
- Not play āpretendā games (pretend to āfeedā a doll) by 18 months
- Avoid eye contact and want to be alone
- Have trouble understanding other peopleās feelings or talking about their own feelings
- Have delayed speech and language skills
- Repeat words or phrases over and over (echolalia)
- Give unrelated answers to questions
- Get upset by minor changes
- Have obsessive interests
- Flap their hands, rock their body, or spin in circles
- Have unusual reactions to the way things sound, smell, taste, look, or feel”
Iāll have some new facts and fun stuff for yāall every Friday this month except for April 16thā¦Iām taking a vacation! Woot woot!
So, just a few more things to mention:
*This week is all about AUTISTIC AUTHORS!
*I have NOT read any of these books!
*Some of these authors may also haveĀ Aspergerās Syndrome which is an autism spectrum disorder
Laura Kate Dale
Genre
I love weird little indie games about sex imps living in Anne Hathaway’s mouth, big sprawling JRPGs, and serious in depth discussions of the artistic value of video game character buttock designs.
I’m always looking for interesting stories about games, the people making them, and the stories that happened along the way to store shelves. If you’ve got a hot scoop, drop me an email or hit me up on Twitter.
Uncomfortable Labels: My Life as a Gay Autistic Trans Woman by Laura Kate Dale
“So while the assumption when I was born was that I was or would grow up to be a neurotypical heterosexual boy, that whole idea didn’t really pan out long term.”
In this candid, first-of-its-kind memoir, Laura Kate Dale recounts what life is like growing up as a gay trans woman on the autism spectrum. From struggling with sensory processing, managing socially demanding situations and learning social cues and feminine presentation, through to coming out as trans during an autistic meltdown, Laura draws on her personal experiences from life prior to transition and diagnosis, and moving on to the years of self-discovery, to give a unique insight into the nuances of sexuality, gender and autism, and how they intersect.
Charting the ups and downs of being autistic and on the LGBT spectrum with searing honesty and humour, this is an empowering, life-affirming read for anyone who’s felt they don’t fit in.

A TV writer’s room intern must join forces with her crush to keep her boss from ruining a lesbian character in this diverse contemporary YA romance from the author ofĀ Queens of Geek.
Seventeen-year-old Bex is thrilled when she gets an internship on her favorite tv show, Silver Falls. Unfortunately, the internship isn’t quite what she expected… instead of sitting in a crowded writer’s room volleying ideas back and forth, Production Interns are stuck picking up the coffee.
Determined to prove her worth as a writer, Bex drafts her own script and shares it with the head writerāwho promptly reworks it and passes it off as his own! Bex is understandably furious, yet…maybe this is just how the industry works? But when they rewrite her proudly lesbian character as straight, that’s the last straw! It’s time for Bex and her crush to fight back.
Jen Wilde’s newest novel is both a fun, diverse love story and a very relevant, modern take on the portrayal of LGBT characters in media.

Melissa A. Joy
Melissa A. Joy is a new fantasy author with Asperger Syndrome who challenges the conventional expectations of fantasy and takes them to a whole new level. It is no secret that she believes in the existence of all things fantastical, and that anything is possible.
She began building the world of Aeldynn and started writing seriously aged approximately 13, and has since developed it into something truly magical worth sharing. From the glorious winged Drahknyr and wise and fearsome dragons to pirates of the high seas and a world rich with history and lore, her imagination could be said to be limitless.
When she isnāt locked in a reverie about whatās going on in the world of Aeldynn, sheās probably out sailing the high seas on a tall ship, training at Kung Fu, gaming, or perhaps dressed up in costume at an anime convention.
Keys of the Origin (The Scions of Balance, #1) by Melissa A. Joy

Two young men; one a righteous law-abiding servant to the people, the other a distinguished outlaw, donāt yet realise they are to play a part in a foretold bid for the future of Aeldynn.
Fate leads them down a road they would never have dreamed of following; a road that leads them into a struggle to bring the world back into a state of balance from the precipice of madness and desolation.
It is not only Zehn and Larkh who are fated to take on the malevolent forces of Aeldynn; there are others who must join with them as they are coaxed into the embrace of the ancient Nays and the fabled Drahknyr, who are also entangled in the masterful puppeteering of a renegade sorceress hell bent on reviving the greatest threat of all.
