EXCERPT:
I glare down at Connor, my hands balling into angry fists. I so want hurt this man, it isnāt funny. Connor knows why Maxon was kidnapped⦠only heās not talking.
āIāll ask you once again, Father.ā Lincolnās voice drips with menace. āWhat the hell is going on?ā
āWhy nothing,ā says Connor with a grin.
Over the years, Connorās ājolly old kingā act has gotten really annoying, but never more so than now. We need the truth and fast. At this point, Iād rather he plunge into one of his classic rages rather than smile.
Lincoln takes a half-step closer to his father and glowers down at him. āWhat do you know about Maxon?ā
āI canāt tell you, son.ā Connor raises his gaze to meet ours. Bit by bit, his smile fades. āAll I can say is this. Iāve been waiting for years to find someone like Hildy. Sheās exceptional. A prodigy. Sheās exactly what we need. Weāll all be safe now.ā
He takes two steps toward the door before Lincoln pins him to the wall, his forearm pressing against Connorās throat. My own breath catches. Lincoln is almost out of control.
āOut with it.ā Lincoln pushes harder onto Connorās neck. āWhat do you know?ā
Octavia rises to stand beside me, her face pale. I know how she feels. Iāve never seen Lincoln so angry.
Connor gasps for breath. āI ca⦠I wonātā¦.ā
Octaviaās hands flutter by her chin. āMy son, what are you doing?ā
āYou know damn well what Iām doing.ā Lincoln re-slams Connor against the wall, only with more force this time around. āYou find the strength and tell me, Father. Now.ā
āLin⦠Lincolnā¦ā Connorās face turns purple.
āWhat do you know?ā Lincolnās voice raises to a roar. āStop being a weak, self-centered worm for once in your life. Find the strength to tell me whatās happening to my son!ā Connorās face turns a deeper shade of purple. His eyes roll back into his head.
āLincoln, stop it,ā I say. āYouāre choking him.ā
āIām not choking him.ā
Lincoln steps back and Connor crumples to the floor, gasping for breath. The purple hue stays on his face a few seconds too long to be natural.
Unholy Hell. I know what that means. Connorās under a magical compulsion. Whatever he knows, he canāt speak of it.
