N9ne: The Tale of Kevin Clearwater by T.M. Frazier
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
N9NE: THE TALE OF KEVIN CLEARWATER is book nine in the King series. You could probably read it as a standalone but it’d really be better to start with book one as almost the entire cast are reoccurring and interconnected!
Kevin Clearwater, aka Nine, is the long lost brother of Preppy (books 5, 6 & 7 in the King series). He’s got a lot to prove to Preppy and his “brothers,” King and Bear. But a chance meeting with Lenore Leary, aka Lenny or Poe, will change his life forever.
I intentionally left the storyline very vague because this is one of those stories that you just have to experience for yourself. There’s a layer of suspense and a small mystery that kept me guessing until the end. Lenny and Nine had a complicated relationship with a lot of twists and turns. It’s a slow burn that ignited very late into the story but I was on pins and needles waiting for them to come together. I won’t go into their backgrounds but I will say that both Lenny and Nine have some serious issues from their past. It’s heartbreaking what they each go through during the book. Lenny used sarcasm to deal with her problems but she was so sassy and funny, she fit perfectly into Nine’s chaotic life. Nine reminded me of Charlie Hunnam sans the beard…yum-me! He was tough, a bad boy with a soft heart.
Plus, for me, the secondary characters really made the story. I freaking ADORED heading back to Logan’s Beach! Seeing King, Ray, Bear, Dre, Frankie and Preppy was priceless. These are the characters that brought the story a bit of levity and I so enjoyed visiting them.
So why not 5 stars? Well, I’ll be the first to tell you that T.M. Frazier is one of unicorn authors, I love her work. BUT…the editing distracted me a bit. As a blogger, it usually doesn’t bother me when I’m reading ARCs (advanced copies) but since I purchased the book, I thought it needed some polishing. Not a big deal, only half a star, just thought it needed mentioning! The other half star came from my own selfish need to have MORE. I wanted to see more of the healing process for both Lenny and Nine. I felt like they both could have grown more as characters, given them more depth.
This was a solid 4 stars with fabulous characters and a hot romance between two broken souls. Though, maybe I should give it 4.5 stars because that cover….RAWR! Told from dual POVs with a happy ever after. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.
Excerpt:
I look up into his dark eyes. “This is a dangerous game of cat and mouse we’re playing.”
“More like a game of cat and bird,” he corrects.
I straighten my posture, my nipples grazing his hard chest. “And we all know how that turns out in the end. The cat eats the bird.”
Nine lightly scrapes his nails over my bare arms before pressing them into my skin. I gasp at the slight bite of pain. “No, the pretty bird swoops down from nowhere and sinks her sharp talons into the cat, marking him for life.”
There’s no sarcasm in his voice. I don’t know how to begin to process what it is he’s saying. It takes all of my concentration to get out my next few words.
“And…and then what?”
Nine picks me up off the floor in one quick motion, flipping me back onto the bed. He crawls over my body, hovering above me, pinning my wrists to the mattress. He grazes his teeth over the sensitive spot behind my ear. He lowers his voice to a deliciously deep rumble that has me vibrating with his every word.
“And then he eats her.”
About the Author
T.M. (Tracey Marie) Frazier never dreamed that a single person would ever read a word she wrote when she published her first book. Now, she is a five-time USA Today bestselling author and her books have been translated into numerous languages and published all around the world.
T.M. enjoys writing what she calls sexy‘wrongside of the tracks romance’ with morally corrupt anti-heroes and ballsy heroines.
Her books have been described as raw, dark and gritty. Basically, what that means, is while some authors are great at describing a flower as it blooms, T.M. is better at describing it in the final stages of decay.
She loves meeting her readers, but if you see her at an event please don’t pinch her because she’s not ready to wake up from this amazing dream.
