Restless Ink by Carrie Ann Ryan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
RESTLESS INK is book 2 in the Montgomery Ink: Colorado Springs series and although the characters interconnect, it is a friends to lovers standalone.
Dimitri Carr is a newly divorced math teacher (with ink hidden under his button ups!). He’s not really looking for any kind of relationship but that changes when he runs into his ex wife’s best friend. Thea Montgomery has been friends with Dimitri for a long time but she hasn’t seen him since his divorce from her best friend, Molly. Something clicks for them when they run into each other but they can’t act on it…can they?
Let me just say that Carrie Ann Ryan is the QUEEN of SWEXY (Ā«– swoony + sexy)! Her characters are always sweet but sexy too and Dimitri and Thea are no exception. Dimitri and his ex, Molly, didn’t have kids but they did have a cute dog, Captain. And WOW, who would’ve thought that a man who adored his dog so much would make my ovaries melt? You just know that when he has kids, he’ll be a great dad! Thea was a hard working, family loving, loyal woman. She was completely torn between her two friends, Dimitri and Molly. In the beginning, Thea seemed a little naive, too soft when it came to Molly. As the story progressed, she realized that she belonged to Dimitri, that they complimented each other as a couple and she began to see Molly’s true self.
Not only is this a SWEXY romance but there’s also just a touch of suspense, a bit of drama that keeps the story rolling. Overall, this was a solid 4 stars for me! Told from dual POVs with a happy ending. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.
āHey,ā Dimitri said quietly when her eyes widened at the sight of him.
āHey.ā She swallowed hard. āYou havenāt been into the shop in⦠well, itās been a while.ā
He smiled, knowing the awkward feeling between them came from his speech the other night in the parking lot. He missed Thea, damn it. Sheād been his friend too, and for all her saying she wouldnāt take sides in the divorce, theyād each pulled away from each other for Mollyās sake. And now he had a feeling heād made the wrong choice.
He didnāt have many friends, not anymore. Most had been his and Mollyās, and a lot of them had gone to her. Heād understood since they were in different social and financial circles than he was, and most had been in Mollyās crowd long before Dimitri met her. But other than his family, he didnāt have as many people in his life as he would like.
And he missed his friend.
āI told you Iād try to be by more. For the cake.ā
She rolled her eyes. āYou sure love your sweets. I have no idea how you stay so built.ā She blushed, and Dimitri chuckled before raising his brow. āYouāre a baker, and I can say the same about you.ā She rolled her eyes. āThe skinny baker schtick is freaking annoying. Iām not skinny. I have curves. And I work my ass off to keep them. Plus, you know, thereās only so many bites of brownies in my life I can deal with.ā
He resisted the urge to look down at her ass at the mention of her curves. Thankfully, she was angled away so that he couldnāt see, but still.
āSpeaking of browniesā¦ā
āI have four kinds left today. We had a fifth, but I underestimated this cityās love of marshmallows.ā
āMarshmallows? I missed marshmallows.ā
She laughed. āYeah, about ten minutes ago.ā
āDamn it, I should have brought Captain with me so I didnāt miss it.ā
Her expression softened at the mention of his golden. āI miss him so much. I donāt get to see him nearly as often as I would like.ā
āSame.ā
She winced. āIām sorry. That has to suck.ā
āPretty much. But Iām still looking for a place that lets in big dogs.ā
āIāll keep an eye out, as well. Iām sure one of the Montgomerys will be able to find one for you. Weāre good at things like that.ā
āIād appreciate it.ā
The light flickered above her, and she let out a curse.
āNeed help with that?ā
āNo, I have it. Itās that damn light bulb. I switched it out a month ago, and itās already going out again. Meaning, I need to find an electrician. I can probably call one of my cousins who are the only ones I trust since itās their job and theyāre the best, but itās still a pain in the ass.ā
She went about getting him a caramel brownie without him even having to ask since, yes, heād go for caramel if marshmallow wasnāt available. Then she set about working on a vanilla latte for him. Apparently, she knew him better than he remembered. āHow late do you work tonight?ā he asked as she handed him his order.
āI close tonight since I didnāt open. But not too much longer.ā Something beeped behind her, and she turned, bent over, and reached to tap something on the counter.
He blinked and did his best not to look at her, not to stare. And thatās when he knew he was screwed. Because he hadnāt been able to get her out of his head, and she was the one person he shouldnāt be looking at.
He wanted her as his friend. Nothing more.
And nothing less.
āI donāt close tomorrow, though.ā He blinked as she turned back to him, biting her lip. āAnd you were right about the whole being friends things. We were friends before you got married, and I miss you, too.ā She swallowed hard. āSo, anyway, Iām having a family and friends game night at my house. Silly games and lots of snacks and booze because⦠why not. Do you want to come?ā
He let out a breath. āI might have plans with my brother. I have to see what heās thinking for tonight, and then Iāll let you know. But, Thea? Thanks for the invite.ā
She smiled. āI hope you can come, but I understand if you canāt. Itās at seven at my place. Show up if you can.ā
And with that, he paid for his snack and headed out of the shop, the image of her very pert backside firmly in his mind. He couldnāt help but want to kick himself. That was not how to keep being her friend, damn it.
And the sooner he got that through his thick skull, the better. Because Thea Montgomery was only his friend. That was all sheād ever been. Heād never thought about her in any other way before this, and he wouldnāt start now.
No matter how hard it was.
