Gracelyn Riley married a firefighter and knew that came with risks. But she never imagined herself widowed in her early thirties with two children to care for on her own. Even though her marriage to Chad Riley had its difficulties, dealing with the last year without him has not been easy. Her brother-in-law, Matt, has been the rock that has kept her from collapsing or imploding.
As a fireman, Matt Riley had been at the scene when his brother, Chad, was killed. For the last year, Matt has suffered from survivor’s guilt and drank himself into oblivion. His sister-in-law, Gracelyn, supported him, lending him a shoulder to cry on. Her friendship has pulled him through time and time again until he finally sobered.
With the year anniversary of Chad’s death upon them, Gracelyn and Matt turn to each for support and comfort. What they didn’t expect was to realize that their feelings for each other go beyond the solid friendship they share. Can they overcome the guilt and the scrutiny of their family and friends to find love together?
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
IN FLAMES is a steamy standalone and my first book by author Jessica Jayne.
Gracelyn has been a single mom and a widow for a very long, tough year. Her best friend and the rock she’s leaned on? Her brother-in-law, single dad and firefighter, Matt. He’s come to rely on Gracelyn’s strength too. But on the one year anniversary of his brother’s death, Matt and Gracelyn turn to each other for comfort. When that consolation becomes sexual, they embark on a relationship that could affect a lot of people. Are they strong enough to push past the boundaries set on them by others?
This is a slightly angsty, well written read. It’s not too long so it can probably be read in one sitting. I’ll confess that I adore a good forbidden romance and Gracelyn and Matt’s story did not disappoint! The hot as hell nooky starts almost from the very beginning and is a huge part of the entire book. But this isn’t just a lot of mindless bonking. No, you can FEEL how much Gracelyn and Matt are drawn to each other. And my heart pounded when they were forced to tell their kids and Matt’s parents. Geez, talk about awkward!
I loved Gracelyn, I felt like she was someone I could be friends with. She was smart and funny and loving. I liked Matt too but he seemed just a tad too emotional for my taste. I know, know…a guy who can cry is wonderful, blah blah blah. I just like my heroes to be bigger, badder alphas!
I’m really glad I picked this one up, Ms. Jayne is an author to keep my eye on! Told from dual POVs with a sticky sweet ending. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.
