About AIN’T DOIN’ IT
Coke Solomon has lived a full life.
He’s a retired army drill sergeant, so he is more than used to getting his way.
And if he can’t have his way?
Well, let’s just say that’s never happened before…
At least not until Cora Maldonado walks into his life, demanding he fall in line, or she’ll find a way to make his life hell.
He finds out fast that Cora marches to the beat of her own drum, and a lot of times that drum takes her farther away rather than closer to where he feels she needs to be.
He can’t stand it.
He wants her, and he has to have her.
It doesn’t matter what she’s twenty years younger than him, and has a father that would rather see him dead than have his baby girl anywhere near him. Nor does it matter that his ex-wife is highly offended that she’s been replaced with a much younger woman.
Despite the odds stacking against them, he’ll fight for what he wants.
His ex-wife, her father, and their age difference be damned.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
AIN’T DOIN’ IT is book 4 in the Simple Man Series and although there’s interconnected characters throughout, it can be read as a standalone.
Coke is an ex drill sergeant. He’s been divorced from his wife for several years and his teenage daughter has just begun college a couple of hours away. Life should be great but his ex just won’t leave him be especially when his new, younger neighbor moves in next door. Coke finds himself entranced by the quirky Cora. Cora, 25 and on her own for the first time in her life, is totally attracted to Coke regardless of the crazy ex-wife in the background.
This isn’t my first read by Lani Lynn Vale but it is the first book I’ve read in this particular series. I had no problems jumping right in though! I completely adored Coke and Cora…Coke was alpha without being an ass. He was charming and sweet but also not a pushover, he knew what he wanted but was able to compromise. I’ll admit, Cora was an odd one but I thought she was hilarious too. She was dealing with some mental issues but really, it wasn’t her that was the wack job. Coke’s ex-wife, Beatrice was. In fact, I absolutely admired Cora’s ability to integrate into the community so well, despite her illness. And when Cora and Coke finally came together…WOW! Talk about sexy!
The storyline wasn’t anything too unique or different. I think the first third of the book was more background information and getting to know Coke and Cora and the other players. So I was a bit surprised when I got hit with the suspenseful twist. I’d call this more of a light romantic suspense. But having said that, I still enjoyed it, mostly because I liked the characters so much!
There’s a few small details that irked me just a tad. For instance, the blurb says there’s a 20 year age difference between Coke and Cora which is a trope that I personally FLOVE and one of the reasons I scooped this book up. But there’s actually only a ten year gap. MEH..not that big of a deal. But along with the age thing, Coke is portrayed as “old” and greying at 35. That’s not freakin’ old!! 🙂
In the end, this was an entertaining read with great characters! Told from dual POVs with a sweet and super sexy ending. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.
